MCX :: Miniature Connector series

Developed in the 1980s, MCX connectors are coaxial RF connectors that have the same inner contact and insulator dimensions as the SMB connector but are 30% smaller. They use a snap-on interface and usually have a 50 Ω impedance. They offer broadband capability from DC to 6 GHz.

While maintaining high performance, the reduced connector size benefits any applications where the space reduction matters such as GPS, Wireless communication, PCB layouts.

MMCX :: Micro-Miniature Connector series

Micro Miniature Connector aka. MMCX is one of the smallest design of RF connector line with 50 Ohm impedance and up to DC 6 GHz usage. By incorporating a lock-snap mechanism, it allows easy latching and high flexibility on PCB layouts.
Cross RF offers a range of MMCX connectors that are applicable to various applications including UT series Semi-Rigid or Semi-Flexible, RG/LMR Flexible cable assembly, and PCB surface mount.

FME configurations are now available.

Cross RF (www.crossrf.com) recently expanded its range of configurable connector options to FME series. Cross RF now has the ability to process custom cable assemblies with FME straight plug or jack.

FME is mobile equipment connectors. The most common usage of FME is for mobile antenna applications. It is a miniature screw coupling coaxial that has a 50 Ohm impedance. They offer excellent electrical performance from DC to 200 MHz.

To retain the highest flexibility in application, RG-174, RG-316 or RG-58 flexible cables are recommended.

About Cable Constructions

Conductor

Solid of stranded silver plated copper (SPC) and silver plated copper clad steel (SPCW) and silver covered copper(SC) and silver covered copper clad steel(SCCS) wires with 40 micro inch minimum silver plating thickness for all configurations.

Dielectric

All of the high temperature, high performance coaxial cable listed have PTFE dielectrics with high dielectric strength and low capacitance in proportion to the dielectric constant. All PTFE dielectrics are manufactured with tolerances tighter than the MIL-C-17 specification to ensure uniformity of electrical characteristics, especially impedance, attenuation and VSWR.

Outer Conductor (Shield)

High temperature braids of silver copper (SPC) wire with a 40 micro inch minimum silver plating thickness are designed in accordance with the appropriate MIL-C-17 specification.

Jacket

Exttuded fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) is available. The FEP is excellent because of its high temperature resistance and chemical inertness.

Terminology of RF/Microwave cables

Attenuation

There are two types of losses with a MIL-C-17 coaxial cable. The first results from the dielectric properties of the core and the second is from conductor losses. The use of PTFE as a dielectric provides the lowest dielectric constant and is very stable over a wide range of temperature and frequencies. The conductor losses depend on the base material of the conductor and shield along with the plating of each, especially in higher frequency ranges.

V.S.W.R (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio)

The VSWR is the vector addition of the impedance changes along the length of a cable. The variations can be random or periodic. A resonance can occur at a particular frequency resulting in a VAWR spike. These impedance changes will often be related to a process during manufacturing. Because of the ram extrusion process for manufacturing PTFE dielectrics, most of the dielectric manufacturiog spikes are not present. The VSWR will change with frequency.

Characteristic Impedance

MIL-C-17 coaxial cable are available with characteristic impedance values 50, 75 and 95 ohms. Most systems use 50 ohms because it allows for maximum power transmission with minimum loss. The 75 ohms cables are more common in cable TV transmission where minimum cable attenuation. The 95 ohms cables are typically used for data transmission applications.
